The North Wake chapter was started mid-year 2011 by Rick Davis and Scheryl McDavid. Both were AWS members and had been attending meetings of the Triangle Chapter and decided there was enough potential interest to start another chapter in the Wake Forest area. 

 

North Wake was selected as the chapter name to make it more inclusive and appealing to a broader base than naming it the Wake Forest Chapter. Rick and Scheryl were co-chairs until Rick moved to Florida in August 2016. 

 

The chapter carried on for another year until the new chairperson decided to step down in April 2017. No one wanted to assume the responsibility of leading the chapter at that time, so the chapter went dormant until 2019. 

 

About that time, four couples in Wake Forest began meeting monthly to enjoy wine, cheese, and parlor games. The host selected the wine theme for the month and each couple brought that type of wine to the party to share and discuss. One of the couples, Jay and Margaret Davis, had been North Wake AWS members before it folded. At one of these monthly meetings, Jay mentioned how similar these meetings were to AWS meetings. After some discussion about what AWS was, they started talking about restarting the chapter. They decided to give it a go with Greg Hedrick and Jay Davis as co-chairs and Randy Screen as the treasurer. 

 

The chapter had its first meeting at Unwined on White in Wake Forest on July 28, 2019, with 16 people attending. Unwined on White was the official home meeting place until the chapter outgrew the facility. The chapter then moved to its new home, the Heritage View Club, and held its first meeting there in February 2020. The chapter had only met there twice before the Covid pandemic shut down group gatherings, and the group held the meeting by Zoom with wine being distributed to members in 2 oz. bottles.

 

Today, we still meet at the Heritage View Club or sometimes at other special venues. Our membership is strong with around 80 members and we look forward to bringing other people into the chapter to discover the many facets of wine!

In addition, our chapter also enjoys participating in the AWS National Tasting Project each year, joining with the over 180 AWS chapters in the United States in tasting and judging select wines from a specific region around the globe.
